Synth-In has announced the release of Da Real 110, a free BOSS DR-110 analog drum machine sample library containing up to 54 round robin variations and velocity layers per drum hit.
Obviously, the author’s main goal with Da Real 110 was to make the library and the accompanying Kontakt 5 instrument as true as possible to the sound of the BOSS DR-110 drum machine, hence such a huge amount of round robin variations that are included in the pack. There are 199 drum samples in the library, 54 of which are closed hat round robin variations and 39 being snare round robins (the kicks, cymbals and claps come with tons of round robins, too).

While such a large number of round robins might sound like an absolute overkill, it was actually pulled of very well and the resulting sample collection is quite impressive. The provided Kontakt 5 patches are very useful as well, as they include all of the round robins for each drum hit, so there’s no need to load all of those samples manually. The NKI patches will work in demo mode in Kontakt Player though, meaning that the full version of Kontakt 5 is required in order to use the patches without a time limit.
An alternative version of Da Real 110 containing nothing but WAV files is also available for download, which is great news for non-Kontakt users who would like to play around with some of these DR-110 sounds. The WAV files are clearly labeled, so it shouldn’t be too hard to manually create the mappings in your sampler instrument of choice.
The samples are published under the CC BY-NC-SA 4 license, which means that they’re free to use even in commercial musical work. It’s also possible to send a donation to Synth-In and support their work if you find this sample pack useful. To sum it up, Da Real 110 is a very cool first release from Synth-In and I hope that they’re planning to release more similar sound packs in the future with the same attention to detail.

“Adapted material” in the form of a musical work is an exception that falls under “fair use” in this case, so you are allowed to make commercial music using this sample library. If the “musical work” (as someone might claim it to be) is, for example, nothing but a large gapped series of snare hits, then it’s not “fair use”, but that’s not what you consider “music” to be, anyway, so there’s nothing to worry about.”
