Audio engineer Jhonatan López recently released the free CCMkI: Classic Compressor, which he made available via his website.
The CCMkI is available for VST3 on Windows and for VST3 and AU on macOS.
You can download the Windows or macOS installers in Zip files via a one-click process on López’s website.
He also uploaded the project to his GitHub, Bansky0, where he outlined the project in detail.
López explains on GitHub that the CCMkI is inspired by “a classic compressor 1176”, presumably referring to Universal Audio’s 1176 Peak Limiter comp, which was first introduced in 1967.
López states that the plugin “was built with the objective of creating a good sounding limiter/compressor with an intuitive interface with the ability to saturate the input signal.”
He continues, saying “The main algorithm is based in Erick Tarr’s basic compressor with a biquad filter and exponential saturation while the GUI kept a minimalistic style with six basic compressor parameters (input, ratio, threshold, attack, release and output).”
Furthermore, the main interface draws “the output signal in real-time and allows users to visualize it with RMS bar meters.”
The CCMkI also features four presets: Sudaka, Orangine, Colour, and Glue.
Sudaka has hard limiting properties with a slow attack and fast release. which allows some transients to pass and adds extra distortion. López noted that this preset is perfect for drums and room mics.
Orangine offers a big squeeze with a mid/fast attack and release, which “fits great with everything.”
Colour saturates the input level and applies light compression to the signal, which is “useful to add harmonics to any instrument.”
Glue offers moderate compression, which of course can be used to glue instruments together in a mix bus.
The user interface and design of the plugin definitely bring to mind classic comps as intended, so if you like vintage vibes then this could be right up your alley.

Unfortunately, there don’t seem to be any official or user demos of the CCMkI in action at the moment.

onWell, I have three dofferent 1176 emus but not an 1176AE and since I’d like to have that 2:1 ratio sometimes I hoped this one could fill a gap. Unfortunately, this is not an emulation. But it is an 1176 style comp and it’s actually very nice. It sounds good and is easy on CPU, so, it can be useful.
