Best FREE Minimoog VST Plugin for Windows just got a major update

By James NugentAugust 2, 202419 Comments3 Mins Read
MiniMogue VA

Memorymoon Synthesizers updated its MiniMogueVA emulation of the Minimoog to version 3.0 (Windows-only).

I’m sure the Windows users among us are already very familiar with Memorymoon’s MinimogueVA; it made Tomislav’s list of the best free hardware synth emulations a decade ago.

I’m also sure that over the years, some Mac users experienced a sense of missing out on this freebie.

Not only does it sound fantastic, but it also emulates, arguably, the most iconic analog monosynth ever, the Minimoog.

MiniMogueVA isn’t a direct clone, as it has some features not found on the Minimoog or Minimoog Voyager, but it gets very close to that unmistakable sound.

MinimogueVA 3.0 looks virtually identical to its predecessor but builds on foundations laid by the previous release with some notable enhancements.

At a glance, the only discernable change to the interface is the addition of a filter cutoff slider in the Delay section to emulate the bucket brigade delay effect.

All of the popular features from the last release are present, like Poly Mode (five-note polyphony), along with the arpeggiator and the 16-note step sequencer.

A big thank you to BPB reader Akira, who made the demo video below:

YouTube video

Version 3.0 (now in 64-bit VST2/VST3) features a new high-quality oscillator, delivering a brighter sound. MinimogueVA 3.0 sounds excellent for all the Minimoog classics: Parliament-style funk leads and basses, Hip Hop leads, soaring psychedelic leads, and even more with Poly Mode. Herbie or Bernie Worrell fans will be in their element with this one.

Other new features include:

  • Updated zero-delay filters
  • New envelope curves (modeled after the Minimoog)
  • 12dB (SEM) filter has a crossfade slider between LP and HP
  • Moogfilter has an overdrive slider

There’s no better way to describe a synth than to let you hear it, and thanks to our reader, Akira, we can do just that.

Akira put together a demo video showcasing a wide range of sounds. You can hear the brightness from that newly enhanced oscillator in some of Akira’s patches; it sounds great.

If you’re a Windows user, go get it!

Now, to repeat myself, as promised, here’s another reminder to enter our Decadence Trailer Toms giveaway while you can; there are only a few days left.

I might as well repeat myself again by saying Trailer Toms is possibly the best library of its kind I’ve ever heard; it sounds epic, and it’s ready to go.

When I started working with a DAW (that came with my audio interface) this was my favorite synth. However, when my DAW updated to 64-only I had to say goodbye. This is a nice chance to rejuvenate our relationship. I hope my new Mini’s won’t be too jealous ;-)

When it was released back in 2006, it became one of my all time first VSTs. These days there are so many good free VSTs one can almost get lost, but back then free stuff was rather scarce.
I have still been using the old 32 bit version in FL Studio, and this new 64 bit version slips perfectly into any old project I believe.
Great to see Gunnar Ekornås still caring about it and updating it :-)

Alongside Superwave P8, Ugo Rez, and their like, as they were given an interface, one could MIDI learn the knobs and sliders, and that gave many an eye opener about computer music back 15-20 years ago

I actually downloaded this but didn’t extract it. I ended coppin the mini v4 from Arturia. I figured since Bob Moog himself co-signed on it being the closest to the real moog, I rather have dat. I got it on sale. I just wish the sale would have happened b4 the sale at Ik multimedia happened. I copped the Syntronik v2 max. All those models n sounds. I copped it on sale so it wuz no big thang. Howeva, it’s alotta gigs those sounds would take up if I downloaded all. Plus the sound doesn’t sound nothin like how Waves mini moog, Miniverse from Cherry audio, or even Monark from NI. Neva mind Mini V4.

The original was fun, and a joy to use because it followed pretty close the Minimoog layout, and OSC waveforms. And I didn’t mind the aliasing it had, even used it musically at times.
This new version makes it a proper, good sounding instrument. The oversampling isn’t needed as much, perhaps when using filter modulation, but not just because you’re getting in the octaves.
      Wuvely.

Just did a quick comparison with the good old Minimogue Luxus – it’s a 32 bit VST, but Reaper still handles it very well. Yes, sound-wise there is a difference and obvious improvement, but I wouldn’t say it’s groundbreaking. What’s more important, the new version doesn’t read presets made with the old one, which is a bit of a shame because some of the better/more interesting ones are being omitted. Of course that’s a quick and subjective observation, but for now I’m not going to abandon the Luxus version, which I still use even rarely.

Thanks for trying this out. If the new version can’t read patches made with the 32 bit version, that is a major flaw if wanting to keep old projects alive. Means one have to keep both versions, but as the dll files are named the same, in my case the DAW I am using FL Studio can’t distinguish between them.

I see. Well I’m with Reaper. I’m copying the whole instrument folder in the main VST folder – Luxus has different named folder than the “normal” and updated Minimogue so I can see both plugins. Maybe in some future I’ll try replicate the patches I like:)

Hope you liked the demo as well.
I just would like to mention the new oversampling feature and the great new 24 db filter :)

Can someone give me the 3.0 version please. I updated to the new version 3.1, but now can’t open the synthesizer in my last project.
Only the new version is uploaded on the developer’s site.
