Wasted Audio Releases 3 FREE Distortion Plugins

WSTD MANGLR

Wasted Audio releases three freeware distortion plugins for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

As you may know, I have professed my love for distortion here time and time again. With that in mind, we will be focusing today’s coverage on Wasted Audio‘s latest distortion plugins.

The main attention will be given to the three freebies, however, there is also a larger paid plugin, which we’ll get to discuss in due course.

CRSHR is a bit crusher, as you might have guessed from the name. Rather than handing over finer granular control to the end user, you have a single knob for how crushing is applied and a mix knob.

In action, this one sounds fantastic and adds that sweet digital aliasing that sounds so nice strapped across a drum bus.

FLDR is a wave folder and can go from smooth and sedate to absolute mayhem. Thankfully, this one has a limiter built-in so you can avoid overages. Like CRSHR, this is also a single-knob plugin in spirit.

You dictate how much wavefolding is being imparted on the signal, and you can dial in the wet/dry mix to your liking.

Finally, there’s SMTHR, which functions more like a traditional overdrive pedal. Like FLDR, it integrates a limiter directly into the signal path, so you can prevent overages.

The sound of this one is snarly, and very mid-heavy to my ears. It’s a great companion for your acid basses as well as adding little heat and grit to a Reese bass.

These all come in the wake of MANGLR, which combines all three of these plugins into a single cohesive plugin. The starting price is $6.66 for MANGLR, which is rather cheeky given that Halloween is just right around the corner.

Now, functionally, these three plugins are identical to the sounds you can coax out of MANGLR. There’s nothing stopping you from loading all three in series with your DAW of choice and giving some extreme chaos to your favorite sound sources.

All of these plugins are available for Windows, Mac, and Linux computers. Supported plugin formats are VST, VST3, LV2, and CLAP.

If you like crazy distortion tools, check out our free BPB Dirty Filter Plus plugin. It combines a highly resonant filter with different distortion modes for maximum audio carnage.

Dev here. One of the advantages of MANGLR is of course that you can put DAW automation on the effect sequence and change the sounds you get over the course of your track.
A setup that would be pretty hard, or at least extremely inconvenient, when loading all the separate plugins ;)
