Sender Spike Releases FREE Signal Noise SN03-G Tape Recorder

Sender Spike has released Signal Noise SN03-G Tape Recorder, a freeware tape saturation effect in VST plugin format for digital audio workstations on Windows.

Signal Noise SN03-G Tape Recorder is an advanced tape emulation VST plugin with an innovative concept. Instead of focusing on emulating a particular type of tape recorder, the plugin lets the user create a fully customized virtual tape machine. This custom tape recorder can operate anywhere in the range between 7.5 and 30 IPS. It also conforms to NAB, IEC, and AES equalization standards.

The plugin emulates both the frequency response and the saturation properties of hardware tape recorders. Tape hiss emulation is also included. The user can tweak all the parameters of the tape emulation algorithm, from input gain to recording and reproduction EQ modules, EQ modes, and tape hiss. A fully-featured VU meter is also included.

Signal Noise SN03-G Tape Recorder is meant to be used on multiple tracks and bus channels within a single DAW session to create a cumulative tape saturation effect. Because multiple instances must be used to get the desired effect, Signal Noise SN03-G Tape Recorder was optimized for low CPU consumption.

You can download the Signal Noise SN03-G Tape Recorder plugin directly from the product page linked below. User registration is not required. The downloaded archive contains the plugin files that should be extracted manually. SN03G is the standard version of the plugin, and SN03 is the GUI-less version. Use the GUI-less version to further improve the performance and use less memory with multiple instances of the plugin.

    Tomislav,

    please also check the free tape model plugin by Jatin Chowdhury of Stanford University. It’s based on an academic paper about tape modelling in DSP. We discussed it on KVR in the DSP forum and Jatin joined the discussion and even quickly made a revision of the plugin code:
