Yamaha SHS-10 Toy Keytar Sessions (Free Sample Pack)

Yamaha SHS-10 Toy Keytar Sessions (Free Sample Pack)

Taking a short break from Commodore 64 Synthesizer Sessions, I’ve decided to release this set of free samples from a Yamaha SHS-10 toy keytar which I used to own.

It’s a cool looking little keytar with some nice and cheesy FM sounds, but I had to sell it since there’s hardly any space left in my room for such little gadgets. Of course, I listed it in the ads only after sampling all of its preset sounds.

The Yamaha SHS-10 is essentially a toy keyboard, but it can also be used as a MIDI controller. It even has a miniature pitch bend wheel! The keys are quite small and there’s no velocity sensitivity of course, but it definitely looks way cooler than most other MIDI keyboards out there.

Contents

Yamaha SHS-10 Toy Keytar Sessions includes my favorite presets from this little toy keyboard, along with the lovely lo-fi Yamaha SHS-10 drum kit. All the samples (69 samples in total) are 16-bit WAV files, with Kontakt 5 and Shortcircuit 1 patches included. The download size is 13.4 MB (26.4 MB on disk). Here’s a list of included presets:

  • 03_PIANO
  • 10_ELECTRIC_PIANO
  • 11_CELESTA
  • 12_VIBRAPHONE
  • 13_MARIMBA
  • 21_CELLO
  • 24_WOOD_BASS
  • 32_HORN
  • DRUMS

The patches have a key range from F1 to C3, just like the real SHS-10 does. The SHS-10 also has a vibrato button, so I’ve mapped that to the mod wheel. If you’re going for full realism, make sure you switch off velocity sensitivity in your sampler – I’ve decided to leave it on by default. Unfortunately, there are no custom Kontakt GUIs this time – all the photos I have were taken with a crappy phone camera, and they generally look too grainy/smudged to be used for a decent GUI.

Hi thanks for creating this, love the pack.

I have a SHS-10 and find your samples very useful for recording the keytar, especially the drum kit as I can’t find a way to play individual drum sounds, only the preset drum styles. How did you sample the drum kit?

Also, I don’t know if it’s because of different versions, but my SHS-10 drums comes with one less hihat sound and one extra tom sound compared to your drumkit. Any idea why?

    Cheers,
    Ron

Hi Ron, cheers for the comment! I’ve recorded the drum loops first and then edited the recordings in Wavosaur to come up with drum hit one shots. I’m not sure about the extra tom though, it’s quite possible that I’ve missed it when creating the pack.

The only thing you forgot is dumping the demo song’s MIDI data from MIDI OUT! This is actually needed to do! Here is how to export the LastChristmas.mid data:
    1. Make sure the MIDI OUT port on your device are connected to the MIDI IN from your computer (via USB MIDI).
    2. Using Sekaiju, create a new file, select all pre-created events starting from 01:02:000, then delete everything of those.
    3. Make sure “Speed = Slave to other machine” is selected and set the intended tempo value of the internal song. Now click the Real-Time Input (record) button to start recording then so hit the DEMO or Start/Stop button on device.
    4. Stop recording, then optimize the data (e.g. extra/duplicate events, offset to start of first MIDI event, convert to format 0 if possible).
    5. Finally, save as a MIDI file and there you have it: a dumped MIDI demo song from your MIDI device! Repeat this procedure if there are more available songs to do.

Ah, that would rock, but it’s too late now. I sold the SHS-10 years ago.
