When it comes to software plugins, guitarists and bassists have been eating well over the last few years. While I can’t help but sing the praises of something like Neural Amp Modeler, there are competitors with equally compelling software products on the market.
TONEX captivated guitarists with its hardware pedals, but the software suite bearing the same name is an excellent choice for bedroom strummers out there.
For the next two weeks, you can snag TONEX for $49.99 over at Audio Plugin Deals, a significant discount compared to the $199.99 MSRP given by IK Multimedia. So, what does it come with?
TONEX comes with over 400 Tone Models, the name given to the amp captures the software uses. These span across 40 amps and 20 pedals, covering a wide variety of genres from crystalline cleans to disgusting high-gain.
Provided you have the appropriate hardware, you can also capture your own hardware, which ties into arguably the biggest selling point for TONEX. Any of the paid tiers for TONEX gives you access to ToneNET where the 400 Tone Models can explode into 1000s of different captures of your choosing.
This is where the software suite really shines in my honest opinion. I own the highest tier of TONEX and have greatly enjoyed the ease of use of browsing ToneNET at my leisure directly in the plugin.
That said, the interface is a bit cumbersome to navigate. Menus could be far more responsive when looking for specific captures. Sound-wise, it’s a home run.
It won’t beat the feeling of rushing air hitting your back from a great tube amp and cab combo, but it nails a fair bit of the nuance of a great amp and speaker combo.
At $49.99, this is a solid choice for users looking to skip the more tweak-heavy elements of platforms like NAM or Tonocracy.
TONEX operates as a standalone application or plugin and allows you to use TONEX captures within Amplitube if you’d like to leverage the effects. I think it’s certainly worth a purchase, the base package features one of my favourite mid-gain Marshall sounds.

onHad to spend some searching what is in the package, especially what pedals. It’s not a good sign IKM is not open about that. There is a document of 45 (!) pages with all combinations of amps, cab and pedals, but no separate list of amp and pedals, specified by each of he four versions (you can find a list on a forum). As far as I can see Tonex offers (almost) only boost, overdrive, distortion and fuzz pedals, hardly anything in the realm of other/modulation FX. No famous wah, (tape) delay, auto-filter, reverb, flanger, phaser, uni-vibe etc. So in a way rather extensive, but in a limited musical field.

Important to mention that with captures it is not possible to profile time based effects like reverbs, modulation etc.
It is however possible to use those TONEX amp profiles with effects by loading them in Amplitube and using effects from Amplitube.

onWhile you can do that, the amp and cabinet capture cannot be separated in Amplitube, which makes the integration less interesting. Plus you’re locked to IKs captures and what you make (which requires a CUDA capable card). Compare that to Two Notes’ Genome, which can load its own profiles, NAM, AIDA-X and GuitarML ones.
