    A modular synth like VCV, it is infinite. Free, holds almost any plugin, ridiculous amounts of optionsā€¦ it takes a while to learn but it pays off

    Iā€™ve been using Arturiaā€™s FX Collection (2) in almost every production this past year, most notably all the compressors, DIMENSION-D and JUN-6 chorus, Filter MINI, the plate and spring reverbs ā€“ the SYNTHI in particular, the TAPE-201 and my absolute favorite; MEMORY-BRIGADE!

    Donā€™t sleep on Sonic Charge Bitspeek for vocals and check this out; Xfer Delta Modulator for drums!

    Long-time free favorites; HeadCrusherFREE and REFLEX free.

    Donā€™t use it often but when I do itā€™s perfect and nothing compares; Szechuan Saturator.

    Also big shoutout to Analog Obsession (totally stand up to Arturia), kHs (great low-CPU utilities), and I really love all the Freakshow Industries stuff (the most sound-design-y recommendation ā€“ awesome interfaces, beautifully unpredictable)!

    Iā€™ve been liking running my old, decrepit Yamaha V50 keyboard (chock full of 80s synth/sample goodness) through cheap guitar effect pedals. Then I mash up the sounds with some AudioModern plugins I got for free (GateLab, PanFlow, etc). Fun times.

    I like using convolution reverbs (I use the one in Ableton ā€“ Hybrid Reverb).

    Instead of using an impulse response to simulate space to add dimension to the sound, I like to use .wav files of interesting sounds to morph the original signal while keeping more accurate pitch and formant qualities.

    You can do this with some cabinet sims, too. Really anything that can host a .wav file for an impulse response.

    Thanks for such an informative blog mate, always bringing my attention to great new products.

    Iā€™d LOVE to win this incredible effects processing suite. My answer to your question is actually very relevant to why I love the idea of AudioThingā€™s software so muchā€¦

    For me, there is no single magic plugin, my tool of choice is any capable DAW (I use Pro Tools and Studio One) and itā€™s advanced flexible signal routing, so that I can expose my evolving signal to countless preconfigured effects channels and chains to modify the signal with subtle nuances right through to bold reactive reflections, and everything else in between. Can craft anything imaginable through complex compounding of effects plugins.

    The awesomeness here is that, with quality plugins, I can dynamically factor the processing in such fine detail using the DAWā€™s channel and plugin parameter automation.

    Having a whole collection of effect plugins at your fingertips, such as AudioThingā€™s software suite, essentially enables this incredibly powerful DAW feature. It then becomes more about which plugins you have access to, and the flexibility, sound shaping diversity and ensuing impact on the signal arising from multiple modifiers cross pollinated with each other.

    This in conjunction with being able to feed these effects with any signal to begin with, and cyclically after each iteration whether automated or with manually processing, I think provides truly endless sound design possibilities!

    At least, this is how I get truly unique results :)

      PS. I switched from Pro Tools to Studio One because I missed the upgrade boat and canā€™t afford their astronomical licensing.

      Was delighted to discover that Studio One, as the far less expensive underdog, punches way above its weight and delivers the same capabilities that even the most expensive DAWs do.

      I think the same can be said for plug-in vendors. Some of the less renowned suites deliver incredible results and itā€™s really beneficial to take the time out to check out the reviews and demos. Some of the very best for creating super unique sound design are often found off the beaten track I think.

      I mean, seriouslyā€¦ check out AudioThingā€™s The Orb and Fog Convolution 2. These are insanely powerful for audio design, let alone the idea of combining them and some of the other effects in their suite.

    Audio Thingā€™s The Orb

    Except for my DAW (FL Studio) and some VSTā€™s (Cherry Audioā€™s Mercury-4 and DCO-106) one of my favorite plug-ins is actually one from Audio Thing: The Orb. It creates these magnificent/weird/atmospheric human sounding sounds/hums. An awful lot of fun.

    My favorite sound design tool is Portal by Output. It really transforms the sound from a nice ok sound, to something more interesting. sometimes its not doing much, but its enough, Portal is a granular effects plugin that puts the oomph when trying to expand the sound you started with.

    1. Output Thermal
    2. Output Portal
    3. Minimal Audio Rift.

    These are the ONES, especially for Bass design. I use Pigments for Granular Pads.

    VCV Rack with VCV Host (payware) that let you host VST plugins ā€“ infinite sound design possibilities.
    Good plugins for sound design are anything by Audio Damage, Unfiltered Audio, Glitchmachines, Inear Display, AudioThing (tada!), Kilohearts Essentials inside Snap Heap etc.

    My favourite sound design tool is my main DAW, Reaper.
    Quick, easy, and also still accept running old 32 bits vst/vsti that I canā€™t get rid of because they are too good (some old 32 bits app as well).

      I would say Reels or RC20 for sound designā€¦ but one VST I use on most of my tracks is Scaler.
      This will help me to find melodies or new chords that matches what Iā€™m playing. A great tool!

    Audiothingā€™s Megaphone is my little favourite. Everytime a client asks for ā€œthat soundā€, it instantly delivers and makes them go ā€œooh!ā€ :) You just canā€™t buy that with any other plugin.
    Saves hassle of putting multiple plugins on the track and fine tuning them ā€“ especially when the effect is needed just in one or two small spots in the song.
    And for 9$? Canā€™t go wrong.

    Iā€™m not sure what sound design means, cause it could mean anything meant to change the texture and character of sounds. As far as the creation of sounds from scratch goes, Element 2, Invader 2, PG-8X, and Messiah 2, for synths. For tonal shaping, a bunch of stuff ā€“ reverbs (Fame Studios, for actual spaces, Envelope, for more ethereal, H-Reverb), tapes (Softube, IK Tascam bundle), delays (McDSP, X-Delay, but thereā€™s many good ones), consoles and preamps (80s and 50s Consoles from Lindell, CLA Mixhub, Kramer HLS, Neold V76), so on, many favorite plugins used specially for creating/enhancing sound textures.

    For years I loved Reaktor as my main go-to for sound design. Which I still use!
    I also enjoy the SpaceCraft granular plugin that Tracktion offers.

    Recently Iā€™ve been using Reasonā€™s chord sequencers to drive various synths that invariably get plugged into their Alligator Filter Gate to add some push-pull. On the tail end of this chain I love using Audiothingā€™s Outer Space or, alternatively, Arturiaā€™s Tape Delay 201.

    Any frequency shifter, my go-to being Kiloheartsā€™ own take on it. Simple and effective.

    Wave Box from AudioThing. I think I got it for free. I like how it works. But in order not to think that Iā€™m being sycophantic, Iā€™ll also mention Giant Verb. This is probably the best reverb plugin for me. I add it virtually everywhere!

    Picking a favorite sound design tool is so hard.
    Hereā€™s a quick summary of what I feel after 20+ years using and testing a lot of music software.

    Control over sound is what makes music unique, allowing us to shape our creations.
    I like to use several kinds of distortion plugins to give my sounds ā€œlifeā€, I use the BPB distortion tool, and also recently like Tritik Krush as it offers very interesting modulation options.
    Apogee Soft Limit does add great warmth with an easy interface.

    The two schools of visual or no visual indication of what we tweak are still there for tools like EQs. I personally like to see, but I always remind myself to listen attentively!

    Lately with the release of master plugins like Waves Studio Rack we finally get to build and reuse complex plugin chains. For example I am most disappointed when a plugin does not have a wet/dry knob. I know itā€™s not common for many plugins but in these days when we can stick a guitar amp on a synth for extra distortion it would be great to dial it down for parallel processing. The Waves plugin allows to do that and so much more, nice utility.

    Another type of feature that I like to use are LFOs for building ā€œautomatic automationā€ and Iā€™d really like to see companies pay attention to the modulation side of their plugins. Most users will not just tweak and forget, but instead will seek to inject life by automating settings. Having LFOs and fun mathematical/drawing based control over parameters is an awesome way to inject life into a sound. I feel Melda audio plugins have built a phenomenal and probably way underused system with their Modulators. Utterly creative !!! Audiothing Dials seem to have such an LFO built in and itā€™s very much something Iā€™d love to try on my guitars and synths.

    I also see interesting innovation coming from Ujam with the way they integrate so much functionality in all their plugins yet with useable and fun interfaces. They create plugins that have a direct focus on helping make music, as opposed to ā€œplugins with featuresā€.
    Valhalla SuperMassive is also fabulous, extremely versatile and I like having written tips on the interface, itā€™s really useful for us users to get reminded of how to use the plugins!

    A word about presets. Itā€™s essential to have a ratings system or to be able to remove presets as thereā€™s very much unusable stuff in most of the plugins I use or test. Best systems allow to rate or highlight and even discard presets we donā€™t like. A plugin with many presets that does not offer all of those options will get annoying to use. Also, best to curate presets as it can make or break a plugin. Most users go through presets to test. Iā€™ve been particularly disappointed with some instrument synths from a big brand that had so many awfully unmusical unusable presets. Quite a mood killer.

    A word about interfaces. Iā€™ve learnt to live with both analog style GUIs and the very plain ones. Whilst I favour the pretty ones, I do however really like scalable GUIs as itā€™s so helpful to focus clearly on one plugin on my second widescreen curved monitor. Everything has to be very readable please ! And easy to assign midi controllers ..

    Finally, Iā€™d like to get the Audiothing package because Iā€™m working so hard on writing and producing my first album. Iā€™d pushing myself doing everything by myself. Iā€™d like to get the best tools to sculpt and mix my tunes. I feel with the Audiothing bundle I should have every tool I need to achieve this !

      What is it with some of us whoā€™ve been writing music and experimenting with audio for decades, yet never released anything!

      Your answer regarding automating plugin params, compounding and otherwise nuanced application of multiple plugins in chain (If I understood you correctly), is pretty much my view too, by far providing the most creative sound design flexibility.

      The wet/dry application is inherently available via the mix console in your DAW, isnā€™t it? Or am I misunderstanding the signal path there somehow.

      Good on you for taking the step to launch an album after so long. Would love to know what the catalyst was, I still donā€™t have the confidence or knowledge to take my completed projects to full scale launch. Even with all my experience, I never made the transition, because Iā€™ve not seen it done first hand.

    My favorite sound design tool is using a simple four band EQ and Distortion to shape sounds. Rolling of the high or low end, then boost or cutting frequencies to bring out honk, or spank, or thump. Then distorting heavily to make it sound nothing like the original signal.

    Arturia Tape Mello-FI! You can use it to either make your stuff sound old as heck or saturate and compress the hell out of your audio. Itā€™s great!

    My analog pedal chain in feedback loop:

    Jamman > pre-drive > delay > slapback echo > reverb > distortion > MS-50 (random) > Freqout > Jamman > Recorder

    Turn the knobs, waitā€¦ and record :)

    Then listen, sample and slice, slice, slice.

    Favorite sound design effect or tool would have to be Rift by Minimal. Their feedback section alone is awesome, but the whole plugin has useful goodies that are fun to mess with.

    Soundtoys, especially Crystallizer for turning a sound into a padā€¦ then itā€™s fun to make it weirder with Goodhertz Wow Control. I also really love Wires (makes everything more interesting), and really want Speakers.

    My go to sound design tool tends to be a pitch shifted delay so something like output portal or soundtoys crystaliser are what I use most frequently.
