Impulse Record Releases FREE Convology XT VST/AU Plugin

Impulse Record has introduced Convology XT, a freeware convolution reverb effect in VST, AU, and AAX plugin formats for digital audio workstations on PC and Mac.

Convology XT is a zero latency convolution reverb plugin which comes bundled with a set of 70 free vintage reverb impulse responses. Additional reverb IRs can be accessed by purchasing the Complete Convology XT Vintage Library (€320) or smaller individual IR packs which are available on Impulse Record’s website. The plugin is also capable of loading external impulse responses in WAV format. Any audio file on the user’s hard drive (or removable drive, for that matter) can be accessed using Convology XT’s file browser.

The impulse responses included in the freeware edition of the software sound very good and cover a wide palette of reverb types. Most of them were sampled from vintage hardware units, from boutique studio effects to guitar amp spring reverbs. The impulses are sorted into different categories to allow for a more convenient preset browsing process. Several tape delay impulse responses are included also and these can be set to any tempo using the built-in time-stretching module. The interface provides an easy way to increase or decrease the speed of the loaded impulse response with a single control parameter.

Speaking of the user interface, it features all the basic and advanced controls one may need when using impulse responses. The user can adjust the start time of the loaded IR file, the attack and release time, decay and pre-delay, as well as the gain and mix parameters. The loaded file can also be reversed or and modulated using the built-in LFO module. The UI isn’t resizable but it’s large enough for comfortable use on modern high-resolution screens.
