Today’s edition of bpb Freeware Studio features the best free sound module VST/AU plugins for Windows and Mac.
Sound modules (also known as romplers) can be pretty useful tools, especially if they come bundled with a collection of decent quality samples. We all love being all creative with our synths and samplers of course, but a rompler instrument loaded with different ready-to-use sounds can be a life saver during those uninspired days which we all tend to have from time to time.
So, until you have enough money to buy yourself a full-featured commercial sound module, try using one of these freeware alternatives instead.

If you’re into classic 90s sounds, don’t make sure you check out the good old Proteus VX. It’s a bit cumbersome to use, but the sounds which come with it (taken from the Proteus 2000 hardware sound module) are definitely worth the effort.
Kontakt Player, SampleTank Free and Independence Free are a safe bet if you need some classic bread & butter sounds. All three come with more than decent factory libraries, packed with all sorts of different sounds – from electric pianos and bass guitars to orchestral instruments and synthesizer pads.
POWER TIP: You can download additional sounds for SampleTank Free on Sonik Synth 2, SampleMoog, SampleTron and Miroslav Philharmonik product pages! Click the download button and follow the ‘download sounds’ link. Extract the contents to your SampleTank Free ‘instruments’ folder and you’re done.
Alchemy Player is the free version of Alchemy virtual synthesizer. It comes with a 500MB factory bank and another bonus soundbank is available for free download once you’ve registered. Some lovely and quite unusual sounds in there!

The factory selection is very usefull with good choice of instruments.
and don’t forget the free 3rd party library [although we can use it only for 30minutes then it need a restart]

onYou can get some free sounds for Independence from soundsondemand.com. You do have to do a bit of digging through all the presets they have though. There’s also a set of free impulse verbs for Origami, which is the built in conv. verb in Independence.

onThe Camel Audio Alchemy Player is still available via computer music magazine as part of their plugin collection. So while not technically free anymore it is still cheap.
