Fazertone Releases FREE Comp76 Compressor Pedal Plugin

By James NugentOctober 20, 20227 Comments3 Mins Read
Comp 76 by Fazertone

Fazertone releases Comp 76, a FREE compressor pedal plugin for macOS and Windows.

Comp 76 emulates the original 70s MXR Dyna Comp pedal.

MXR launched the Dyna Comp in 1972, and it was so successful that it’s still a must-have pedal for many guitarists today. Original Dyna Comp pedals aren’t impossible to come by, but it’s more likely that you’ll see the Dunlop reissues these days (which are said to be great).

Much of the initial success came after the pedal became a constant fixture on the pedalboards of some very influential guitarists. One of those guitarists was the very gifted Lowell George of Little Feat (I’m a big Little Feat fan, which is an unrequested admission, but who knows when I’ll have the chance to mention them again).

Before moving on, I should probably mention David Gilmour (for any Pink Floyd fans), who was a prolific user of the Dyna Comp.

So many guitarists love the Dyna Comp because it delivers a much-sought-after sound with minimal effort. The pedal has just two knobs for Output and Sensitivity, which means dialing in the perfect tone is quick and easy.

As well as tightening your sound and adding consistency, the MXR Dyna Comp became synonymous with the percussive sound that comes from rhythmic/choppy chords. It also has a richness and articulate sustain that’s perfect for versatile playing.

So, if you’re grooving along, add a nice Bluesy line as a turnaround; you can let target notes ring out beautifully. Also, if going for more of a Funk groove, with a muted line as a turnaround, everything stays nice and tight.

If we know anything about Fazertone, it’s that they like to stay faithful to the original hardware. The Comp 76 plugin has the same Output and Sensitivity knobs found on the hardware. The Sensitivity knob is what takes you from slight tightness to percussive attacks and that iconic rich sustain.

The download page has a couple of guitar and bass demos to give you an idea of what to expect.

We’ve covered Fazertone pedal emulations before, and they seem to go down pretty well with guitarists. We’ve had The Klone overdrive and Phaser 74 (another MXR tribute); if you liked those, add Comp 76 to your collection.

Comp 76 is available in AU and VST3 formats for macOS (10.14 upwards) and Windows (7, 8, 10).

Thx!. Fazertone pedals are some of few plugs that managed to impress me in a long time. The Klone is easily the best overdrive guitar pedal that I currently use and Phase 74, let’s say that I thought nothing could ever touch Audiority Dr. Phase but… Actually, I love them both:)

Comp76 is not based on an 1176…? They must be messing with us on purpose.

No, they’re not messing with anybody – it emulates MXR Dyna Comp pedal. It even looks exactly like it, but more important, sounds great.

WA76, Black76, Cali76, CLA-76, and others are all based on the 1176, so obviously the Comp76 is based on… The Dyna Comp that came out in ’72?!? Yep, they’re messing with us.

Well, I have them on an i5 machine under Windows 7 and they work in Reaper. Ok, they are a little slow to load, but so are the other newer plugins (no wonder – this laptop is 10 years old :))

I can’t quite grasp the reason to leave some elements in the GUI out of focus. Similar blurry knobs appear on their phaser as well.
