Magix coreFX VolumeFormer Is FREE Until July 29th!

By Tomislav ZlaticJuly 27, 202021 Comments3 Mins Read
coreFX VolumeFormer by Magix

Magix is offering the coreFX VolumeFormer (€24,99 value) faux-sidechain and volume automation plugin as a free download until July 29th, 2020.

coreFX VolumeFormer is a volume automation tool and a fake sidechain effect. It was designed to deliver “pumping” sound effects that sound like sidechain compression, without the need to create sidechain routings in the digital audio workstation. The software is available in VST, VST3, AU, and AAX plugin formats for compatible host applications on PC and Mac.

Instead of compressing the signal using a sidechain, coreFX VolumeFormer uses a custom envelope to automate the volume. This approach to “faux-sidechain” compression is similar to popular plugins like VolumeShaper by Cableguys and Kickstart by Nicky Romero.

The plugin is very versatile, capable of doing much more than simulating a sidechain compressor. It can also work as an automated gate, a tremolo, and a wah effect.

The interface features a real-time waveform display of the incoming audio signal, with the envelope shape overlayed on top. The user can customize the envelope by moving the five control points. The envelope can be triggered automatically, in sync with the host application, and with adjustable time and shift parameters. It is also possible to trigger the envelope manually (the Manual Trigger parameter can be automated in the DAW).

The user can also adjust the plugin’s operation mode (pump or gate) and the amount of modulation that is applied to the signal. The pump mode emulates a sidechain compressor, whereas the gate mode is suitable for achieving rhythmic gate effects. coreFX VolumeFormer includes over twenty presets, but it isn’t possible to store your own settings as a custom preset.

The envelope can modulate the output volume, the high-pass gate, or the low-pass gate. The GUI is well-designed, with an intuitive control layout. Unfortunately, the interface isn’t resizable.

coreFX VolumeFormer is available for free download via Magix until July 29th, 2020. You will need a valid email address to register a Magix user account. After completing the free checkout process, you will receive the download link and a unique serial number.

EDM, house, trance, or trap: Virtually all modern genres of electronic music feature the characteristic “pump” effect. Forget complex tutorials for sidechain routing in your DAW: coreFX VolumeFormer enables you to create the ducking or sidechain effect by making rhythmic changes to the volume.

This serial key is registered to your email address. Use it to activate the software when loading coreFX VolumeFormer for the first time (a pop-up will appear, asking you to enter the license number and your registered email address). The plugin will play short bursts of noise until it is properly activated.

The installer will install coreFX VolumeFormer and the rest of the coreFX plugin bundle by Magix, including their chorus, flanger, compressor, expander, and several other products. Please note that you can only activate coreFX VolumeFormer using the provided license key. The other installed Magix products will work in trial mode.

I apologize for the negative comment, but this is just a pretty interface, IMHO.

180MB+signup and it literally offers much less than the free TAL-Filter-2 (11MB, no registration) which granted, has a less attractive interface.

Since I already downloaded this thing (which took a couple) I’m gonna take a minute and write a little review:

    VolumeFormer = 5 envelope points, tweakable Y, fixed X (wtf). Filters: 3.
Tal-Filter-2 = unlimited envelope points tweakable on X and Y axis. Filters: volume, low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, pan, notch. + Resonance knob. + Various filter slopes. + An old version that adds some nice drive.

I’m not one to complain about free stuff, but really. Just download https://tal-software.com/products/tal-filter instead and you won’t regret it!

Today I took one for the team guys (lol). If I’m missing something please let me know!

That’s a good tip right there, I totally forgot about TAL-Filter. It’s a great plugin! As for the comparison with coreFX VolumeFormer here, sure, TAL Filter has a far more tweakable envelope and it’s easier to download. Then again, some users might simply prefer VolumeFormer’s interface and workflow. You never know with these things, it’s all up to personal preference with plugins that serve a similar purpose. I think both plugins are keepers.

I couldn’t figure out how to save a preset (apart from using the DAW’s built-in preset manager, that is). Am I missing something?

Sorry, Tomislav, I wasn’t implying you were wrong or missing something. Just expressing how mind-baffling it is that in 2020 a plugin can’t store custom presets. There are users and devs obsessed with very high workflow efficiency, to those a plugin that cannot store personal presets will feel almost like an insult. I still haven’t grabbed it, it’s Duck by Devious Machines that steals my heart.

I know, it also surprised me that saving presets isn’t possible, so I thought I missed something obvious on the GUI. :)

Do I need this if I already have Kickstart, LFO Tool & Volume Shaper?

    Pros: Nice interface, it’s FREEEE
Cons are: registration, big installer with no choice to avoid installing the other plugins, odd workflow and preset manager and the biggest con for me is the CPU usage.
Melda Mtremolo and TAL filter 2 are way better choices IMO.
    Good luck!
